If your pet is currently having a medical emergency, please call us immediately. Our trained medical staff can answer your questions and advise you on how to proceed. Depending on your location and your pet’s situation, you may be directed to another facility for care.

Try not to panic.
Remaining a calm and getting help is the best thing you can do. Pets can sense our anxiety, and will respond to your energy.
Ask someone to help you.
If you can, have someone drive you to the veterinarian so you can be with your pet on the way.
Don’t put yourself in danger.
Busy streets, power lines, chemical spills and attacking animals can injure you as well. Keeping yourself safe will help will help you help your pet.
Be careful, your pet may bite or scratch you.
Animals act differently when scared or in pain.
Even the nicest pets can bite or scratch if they are in a crisis.
If your pet is bleeding
Apply direct pressure to the area with a clean towel or cloth, and come right in.
Grab a large towel or blanket.
Use this to wrap or pick up your pet and provide comfort, warmth and safety from bites and further injury.
What constitutes an emergency?
Any situation where if not treated immediately, could lead to significant and prolonged injury and illness, potentially resulting in death.

Como Park Animal Hospital provides urgent care and emergency services with the same compassionate approach that your regular Como Park Animal Hospital doctors and staff have, during those “after hours” when your regular veterinarian may not be available.
What Constitutes an emergency?
Following is a brief list of problems that would be considered an EMERGENCY and should be treated IMMEDIATELY:
- Difficulty breathing
- Significant trauma (i.e. hit by car, fall, animal fight, broken bones, large wounds punctures)
- Uncontrolled or excessive bleeding
- Prolonged or uncontrolled seizure activity
- Ingestion of objects, poisons or toxic substances
- Pale, white, blue or grey gum color
- Inability to urinate and/or excessive straining to urinate
- Facial swelling and/or hives
- Staggering or loss of balance/coordination
- Bloated or distended painful abdomen
- Uncontrolled vomiting and/or diarrhea
- Sudden loss of vision or hearing
- Uncontrolled and/or debilitating pain
- Sudden change of awareness (unresponsive or unconscious)
There are many other conditions that are not listed that could be just as harmful to your pet. If in doubt GIVE US A CALL and a trained member of our team will let you know if you should seek veterinary intervention immediately.
