Calls from clients concerned about the latest recall of pet foods containing peanut products prompted this informational release to clarify the potential risks to your pet, you and your family.
The first veterinary case of a dog sickened from tainted peanut products has been reported. Tests indicate that it is the same strain of Salmonella implicated in the current outbreak that has sickened hundreds of humans and has led to a number of deaths including three in Minnesota. The sickened dog was treated and is expected to make a full recovery.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some show signs of decreased appetite and abdominal pain. Others may show no signs of being ill. Well animals can be carriers. If your pet has any symptoms or you are concerned please call ComoPark to make an appointment for Salmonella testing.
As people can become infected from animals, special care needs to be taken after contact with infected pets. The FDA advises pet owners to wash their hands with hot water and soap before and after handling pet foods and treats. Pet food bowls should also be washed after each use.
There are over 1500 pet food items on the recall list. As many people share human food products with their pets, it is important to check the complete list of recalled items that your pet may have consumed. A searchable list of food products involved can be found at FDA.gov.
Our concern for your family and pet’s health and safety is the reason for this notification. In all the likelihood your pet hasn’t eaten any of the recalled pet food. This is not a cause for panic, however, to safeguard our patients, the doctors of ComoParkAnimalHospital recommend that any pet that may have eaten the foods on the recall or has diarrhea receive testing for Salmonella.
The best safeguard for protecting your pet from such risks is a regimen of preventive care that ensures good health and a strong immune system. Our doctors recommend twice-yearly physical examinations with fecal and blood analysis to promote a healthy life for your pet.
